Health Assessment & Monitoring

The Dental Board of Queensland recognises that sometimes, the quality of dental practice may suffer if a Dentist, Dental Specialist, Dental Therapist or Dental Hygienist is unwell. The Health Assessment and Monitoring Program is quite separate from the disciplinary and conduct programs of the Dental Board of Queensland. The first goal of the Board's Health Assessment and Monitoring Program is to protect the public. This is the Board's main responsibility.

The second goal is to intervene with expert advice and experience, to help Dentists, Dental Specialists, Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists stay in the workforce wherever possible, provided this can be done safely. The Board aims to have Dentists, Dental Specialists, Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists with illnesses practice in such a way that neither patients nor practitioner are at risk.

Like any other person, a Dentist, Dental Specialist, Dental Therapist or Dental Hygienist can suffer from serious illness. It is in nobody's best interests for Dentists, Dental Specialists, Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists with illnesses to go undiagnosed and untreated. The Board's Health Assessment and Monitoring Program is designed to be supportive, not punitive. The program strives to intervene before patient care is compromised and before steps must be taken to curtail continuing practice.
